Map art?

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you already know how much I love maps.

Yesterday I found an old map of Botswana in a second hand store and brought it home.

The plan was to glue some wooden sticks at the top and the bottom (that worked fine), and to write something on the map
with acrylic paint (this didn't work quite so well...).

I wanted to write 'la famiglia semper', which is Italian for 'family always'. Not sure why I thought that this fits with Botswana,
but I did.

Just when I started writing, the phone rang, Eva called for help with her homework, and I got side-tracked, and miss-spelled
my little Italian saying...

This didn't really please me.

So I took some red paint and crossed the family out (no, I do not have anger issues, this was a considered artistic decision :-) )

And then I left the thing lying where it was and did the photo canvas instead.

When I looked at it again, after some time (and the irritation) had passed, I actually quite liked it.

But I do like my family too, semper!

Lots of love to you,

  1. I'm glad you clarified that for us!! That X looks rather like blood. I can't tell you how many times I've messed up spelling something and ruined a project. I really want one of those vinyl cutting machines one of these days!! (Not sure why I think that will solve my spelling issues, but I do!)

  3. I can see how it grows on you! It looks like some cool graffiti. :-) And believe me, I feel the same way about maps! I've got a 6 x 10 foot world map on the kitchen wall, a set of world history maps in the office, a Wisconsin map and a map of North America on the walls in the hallway, and a boxful of maps. Old books, maps, globes, and graphs. Can't get enough of them!! So I like your new wall hanging. :-)

  5. This is so much better! It reminds me of a "Grow up" smashed poster that I saw online. So... punk art!

  8. You made some decent points there. I looked on the internet for the issue and found most individuals will go along with with your website.
