Crochet and wood, a DIY

While walking the dogs last week I found this tree stump in the field. It was surprising light and surprisingly pretty,
and didn't mind coming home with me.

Since then it has been standing in my garden and I have been thinking about what to do with it.
I love the combination of soft and hard, of rustic and pretty, of crochet and wood.

So I unpacked the left-over wool from the granny blanket and set to work.
For the size of my wood stump I only needed six squares:

Here is how to crochet the granny squares.

Then I joined the squares and crocheted treble crochet around the sides, with double treble crochet at the corners:

I pulled a piece of wool all the way through to be able to pull it tight over the tree stump and put it on:

And now I have to go and join my family for a braai (barbecue :-) ).

Have a fabulous Sunday!

Lots of love,

Chaos and Crochet

Today is one of those ‚breathe deeply and count your blessings‘ days...

The big dog had an operation in his mouth, he is drooling blood everywhere and follows me around making little whiny sounds, heart-breaking…
My daughter woke up in the middle of the night with tooth ache, and the grown-up dachshund who really should know better had a jealousy attack (at least I assume that’s what it was), shredded his mattress and marked the house in three spots (this is a polite way of saying that he peed …).

The baby is still disliked by all four-legged ones and is permanently attached to me.

What is really nice is that in the midst of all this chaos  I am so happy that they are all here :-).

While sitting with Eva last night, I made a heart for each of them.

Crocheting these hearts is wonderfully relaxing.
I found a pdf  that gives the translation of the crocheting terms into English, so I can write it down for you in a way that hopefully makes sense (let me know if not, then I try again :-) ).

Here we go:

I used a 3.5 hook, but you can use whatever works with your preferred wool.

Start off by making 5 chains and closing them into a circle with a slip stich

Then crochet 5 single crochets into the centre, then 2 chains, then again 5 single crochets into the center. Close the round with another slip stich, followed by a chain, into the first single crochet.

Then make 1 half double crochet, 1 double crochet and 2 treble crochets into the next crochet.

Then put 3 treble crochets into the next crochet

Then 2 double crochets into the next

Then a half double crochet into the next

Then into the two chains you made earlier crochet 1 double crochet, 1 chain, 1 treble crochet, 1 chain, 1 double crochet

Into the next crochet make 1 half double crochet

Into the next 2 double crochets

Into the next 3 treble crochets

Then make 1 half double crochet, 1 double crochet and 2 treble crochets into the next crochet

Put another slip stich into the last crochet and your heart is finished.

You can now crochet some chains to be able to hang it up. I used 10 chains and then did another slip stich into the same crochet as the first to make a little loop.

I used my hearts to make a sort of a 'prayer tree', hanging them on a branch and attaching little messages of goodwill that will hopefully filter through and help restore calm in our household :-)

Have a lovely, blessed, heart-filled day
