Valentines' flowers

A fresh new week!

Although here it is not quite so fresh, but hot hot hot.
Clouds build up, and clouds disappear again, and it doesn't rain.

Just about the worst climate for cut flowers. They last a day, and then they hang. A friend of mine puts hers into the
fridge most of the time, and only takes them out when she is sitting in her lounge and can look at them.

But my fridge is full with the last of the watermelons (Ice Age flashback :-) ), and there is no space left for much else.
The season is coming to an end, and I will have to find a replacement for my favorite food, watermelon and feta salad.

What I am really trying to say in this round-about way is that I love flowers, and I want them in my house.

So today I did something vaguely Valentine related, which is loving myself and giving myself a potted flowering plant (thanks Danni ).

This pretty flower is called 'Impatiens', which is a nice reminder of how not to be.

Unfortunately it came in a really ugly pot, so I replanted it. Hopefully it will not drown in the mason jar.
There is gravel at the bottom, but there are of course no draining holes.

But it will definitely last longer than a day, and it will look pretty while it lasts :-).

A wonderful start of the week for you. May it be filled with love and flowers!

Lots of love,

Valentines' heart

A simple (and transient :-) ) Valentines' heart.

Bend a wire hanger into a heart shape, then add some greenery.

Spring wreath

All the beautiful flowers I collected last week have died. But my thirst for color and beauty and spring is still there,
so I decided to find something a bit more permanent.

This little DIY comes with a warning: For once I didn't find it easy to do but rather awkward and difficult.
At least for those of us that are not blessed with a lot of patience...

It might be easier if you use hazelnut sticks or something else a bit more pliable. The sticks I had were very hard
to bend and often snapped instead of making a nice round form.

If you use brown sticks, using a green florist wire is also a much better idea than the silver one I had (again, being
too impatient to first go shopping).

Seeing how close I was several times to just throw it in the bin it actually turned out nice.

A little bit of spring in autumn :-)

There isn't much to explain. Bend your long brown sticks into a wreath and fix with the wire (or buy a ready-made wreath
and safe yourself the aggravation).
I planned to glue the flowers on, but they actually all had little wires and so I could just fix them onto the brown sticks.

It took a while to find a place for it too. After it fell off the door for the third time I decided to put it somewhere else, spoiling
the puppies fun in the process. She loved diving onto the wreath every time it came flying.

It fell off here too. My walls are made of cow dung and clay and nails do not really hold.

Final (for now) spot for it:

Wishing you a day filled with sunshine, flowers, joy and gratitude!

Love,

Spring feeling

We are going into autumn now, but my body clock after all these years on the Southern hemisphere still says it wants spring.

Might also be because after the rains everything here starts to flower.

I took a walk through the neighbourhood with the big dachshund (to get him away from Lola's constant play attacks), and here is what we found:

A colorful spring/autumn flower greeting for you, me and my house :-)

Down by the river

Today was one of these days that doesn't really get going.
Or better, I didn't really get going :-)

Wandering back and forth, starting one thing, leaving it, starting the next thing, nothing flows.
I feel like a caterpillar, cocooned in and waiting, not very patiently....

Then I took the dogs to the river behind our house.

River is a actually a gross exhilaration. It is a riverbed containing rocks and rubbish and no water. The first time somebody called this a river I laughed, but then I realized that this is as good as it gets in Namibia, and I started to call it river too.

But now it is the rainy season and we had a couple of showers last week.

And when I got there everything was green!
There were reeds and there was grass and there were the most gorgeous sunflowers!

And even a trinkle of water.

What a wonderful reminder that what is meant to flower will flower, when the time and the conditions are right.

Or, to stay with my metaphor, become a butterfly :-)

Lots of love
