Ruffle Scarf DIY

We are invited to a birthday party tonight.

I have been putting off getting a present, a combination of an aversion to shopping malls and a fear of the on-going sales (the 'reduced' signs draw me in, but then I always find the most gorgeous things from the new collection. Even if I resist buying they tend to take up space in my head, tempting me and using up valuable brain cells that are urgently needed elsewhere).

Anyway, it is now Saturday morning and I need a present.

First I decided to make earrings out of little crocheted hearts. They look very sweet (will show them some other time),
but I realized that I have no idea if my friend has earholes. Bit risky...

Then I baked macaroons. At least I tried to bake macaroons. Lets just say I need to practice a bit more.

As a third attempt I made this ruffle scarf. It was quick and easy and the outcome is quite satisfactory.

You can use any longish fabric you like. Mine started of being 50 cm wide (about 20 inches) and 1.50 m long (about 60 inches).
This was far too short once I had ruffled it so I cut it in half lenght-wise, which gave me 25 cm (10 inches) width and 3 m length (118 inches) before ruffling.

To ruffle just take some thread and make wide stitches along one side, ruffling the fabric as you go along. You can also stitch on both sides of the fabric (about 10 cm (about 4 inches) in from the edge) or just along the middle.

That's it.

An unforeseen side effect is that the scarf is making me quite silly. Must be the rush of wearing grey, which is ok as I am NOT going to keep it :-).

Have a lovely Saturday

  45. questions..... how many inches was the fabric before ruffling? 3m = 30in??? did you mean 130? how long was the final product? and how exactly did you stitch it... by hand or machine, and if on machine, how? ive tried something similar, but the single stitches cut into my neck, and the ruffles move back and forth on the thread. did you have these problems/ how did you avoid them?

    1. Hi Rumi, oh my, 3 m are 118 inches, not 30. thanks for pointing this out. i fixed it now. I stitched it by hand, making biiiiig stiches (about 0.5 inch long). you can also do that with the machine, just setting your stitch size to very big. to avoid the ruffles moving, make a small double stitch every couple of inches, then they move only between the double stitches.
reg. the cutting into the neck, didn't happen with me, but maybe you could use elastic thread. might work better.
good luck and thanks for your comment
